SAWYER COUNTY: Osprey Lake Eurasian Water Milfoil Treatment

Purpose

Saywer County in partnership with Osprey Lake Association is sponsoring a two-year project on Osprey Lake to chemically treat 8-10 acres (<5% of the littoral area and in existence for <5 years) of Eurasian watermilfoil. The deliverable for this project is an annual report that summarizes volunteer monitoring results, herbicide treatment details, and any other control activities. Project methods require: 1. Treatment to occur in May before native plants are established. 2. Volunteer monitoring at least twice a year to record EWM presence/absence, approximate size of EWM beds, and presence of other plants. Special Conditions 1. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the regional Lake Coordinator. 2. In-kind or volunteer services must be documented as match for reimbursement. 3. Treatment must be in compliance with the Department issued Aquatic Plant Management Permit.

Reports and Documents
Eurasian water milfoil was found in Osprey Lake in 2005. An herbicide treatment using 2,4-D was done in June of 2006. Eight acres of EWM were treated May 22, 2006 with 125 lbs of Navigate herbicide per acre. Surveys done the beginning of July showed only a few occasional scattered EWM plants in the treatment areas. Another survey on July 31, 2006 showed no increase in EWM from prior surveys. On August 2, 2006 a crew from the WI DNR completed a point intercept survey of the lake. They found no milfoil on the southern portion of the lake and only a few scattered plants near the inlet from Round Lake.
