Purpose

The Elk Creek Priority Watershed Project plan assesses the nonpoint sources of pollution in the Elk Creek Watershed and guides the implementation of nonpoint source control measures. A study in 1971 by the DNR indicated that Elk Creek had a high phosphorus and nitrogen content caused by sediment and nutrients entering the stream from upland erosion and livestock waste.

Objective

To achieve the goal of rehabilitation and protection within the Elk Creek watershed, the project will focus on: decreasing sediment load to Bugle Lake, improving biotic index values to the excellent category, reduce fecal bacteria to less than 200 counts per milliliter, and having clean looking and smelling streams.

Outcome

Water quality will be monitored through: biotic index monitoring, bacteria count monitoring, fish surveys, chemical event monitoring, and chemical water quality characterization. The deposition of sediment delivered to Bugle Lake will be evaluated. Public opinion surveys will be conducted.
