VILLAGE OF WEST BARABOO: Baraboo River Corridor Shoreline Restoration Plan

Purpose

This project will prioritize stream bank protection and fish habitat enhancement areas and complete a shoreline Restoration plan that focuses within the City of Baraboo, Villages of West Baraboo and North Freedom, according to the Baraboo River Corridor Plan phase I. The plan will focus on identifying specific stream bank stabilization and fish habitat enhancement techniques best for large river shoreline protection and restoration, stream bank erosion reduction, sediment and non-point pollution reduction, native vegetation, and protection of boat and angling access points to the Baraboo River. Plans will include protecting and enhancing fish habitat using in-stream habitat improvement combined with bank protection. Outreach during this planning phase will include meeting with communities, WDNR- Fish Mgmt. staff, local anglers, as well as various conservation organizations and paddling clubs, communicating the proposed plan, and gaining feedback prior to a final plan. Recommendations will be used by the communities during the next phase of implementation of final shore and fish habitat protection designs. Deliverables: Identify and prioritize areas with steep slopes in need of shoreline protection and enhancement of fish habitat. Identify areas of native vegetation to be protected, and areas of critical habitat. Output preliminary hydraulic calculations to ensure flood elevations do not increase if shoreline and habitat practices are put in place. Estimates of costs to implement specific practices will be included. Identify specific shoreline and fish habitat techniques appropriate for large rivers. Plans will be shared with conservation organizations, paddling clubs, the public and communities will post results on their websites. The Friends of Baraboo River will coordinate outreach and education efforts. The communities of Baraboo, West Baraboo and North Freedom will hire a consultant to implement final designs.
