COUDERAY WATERS REGIONAL LAND TRUST: Moose Lake Legacy Initiative

Purpose

The Moose Lake Legacy Initiative will analyze landscapes within the West Fork of the Chippewa River basin Watershed, with particular attention focused on the islands and shorelines of Moose Lake. Many of Moose Lake's private lands still remain in a natural state. The goal is to protect these lands in a natural state to preserve scenic beauty, high quality fishery and water quality. The project includes the following goals: 1. Develop a watershed and lake information system (WALIS) appropriate for natural resources and land conservation decision making, planning, and management. 2. Develop a watershed and lake conservation strategy that prioritizes the most critical, threatened, aesthetic, or ecologically important shoreline and island resources. A survey for aquatic invasive species (AIS) will also be implemented. 3. Build awareness and partnerships among local stakeholders, conservation organizations, professionals, and others regarding project results, methods, issues, watershed conditions, and land conservation strategies. 4. Enhance Couderay Waters Regional Land Trust's capacity to conserve and protect critical lands in perpetuity. Project deliverables include: 1. Complete the Moose Lake and West Fork of the Chippewa Watershed atlas. 2. Complete island and shoreline inventory. 3. Complete critical island and shorelines inventory. 4. Hold an educational open house and complete a workshop summary report. 5. Produce an educational pamphlet that summarizes project results and strategies for protecting resources. 6. Complete Moose Lake legacy final report. Specific conditions for this Project: 1. Contact UW-Extension staff for information on training, workshops or educational materials for the AIS Monitoring (Laura Herman, 715-365-8998) Program. 2. The WDNR will be provided electronic and hard copies of all data and or reports/plans generated as a result of this project. 3. Inform lake association members about this project.
