BIG SAND LAKE PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION: Big Sand Lake Restoration/EWM Control

Purpose

Big Sand Lake Property Owners Association is sponsoring an AIS ACEI grant on Big Sand Lake in Vilas County to be completed by December 31, 2008. This is a five year project that will focus on EWM management, and AIS education, prevention and monitoring. The Association will submit future ACEI grants as needed to continue the five year project. The goal is to have an 80% reduction on the EWM acreage and frequency of occurrence within vegetated areas of the Point-Intercept survey. This will allow Big Sand Lake Property Owners Association to continue management of AIS with minimal state financial assistance. Project activities include: 1) Annual manual removal and chemical treatments of EWM; 2) Annual Pre and Post treatment monitoring and analysis; 3) Annual curly-leaf pondweed assessment; 4) Conduct chemical residual and DO monitoring; 5) Annual volunteer AIS and water quality monitoring; 6) Clean EWM fragments from boat landing; 7) AIS educational and partnering activities; 8) Recruit volunteers and implement a CB/CW program; 9) Entry of inspection forms 3200-120 and monitoring forms onto Dept website; 10) Develop annual project report and a final report. Project deliverables include: 1) Chemical and manual control of EWM; 2) Pre and post treatment and curly-leaf pondweed survey data; 3) Completed entry of inspection 3200-120 and monitoring forms onto Dept website; 4) AIS educational, prevention and monitoring activities; 5) Water quality, residual and DO monitoring data; 6) Final report summarizing EWM management during project and future EWM management suggestions, CB/CW activities, AIS monitoring and AIS educational activities. Specific Conditions for this project: Final report needs Dept review and approval. WDNR Lakes Management Coordinator will be provided with an electronic (pdf or word) and hard copy of final report, all annual reports, pre and post treatment survey data, and samples of educational and outreach products.

Reports and Documents
Big Sand Lake is a 1,408 acre drainage lake located in northern Vilas. Big Sand Lake exhibits good water clarity and according to the Wisconsin Trophic State Index is an oligotrophic lake. Eurasian water-milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum - EWM) and aquatic invasive specie (AIS) is confirmed on Big Sand Lake. Lake residents have become concerned about the presence of EWM and other AIS in the aquatic plant community of Big Sand Lake. In 2008 EWM was actively managed on Big Sand Lake with a treatment of 127.6 acres of the total 309 acres treated. Northern Environmental completed pre and post-treatment surveys in 2008 along with fall EWM mapping surveys in 2007 – 2008. The fall surveys are used to delineate any changes in EWM location, map new areas, and create potential treatment areas for the following year.
