SPIDER CHAIN OF LAKES IMPROVEMENT ASSN: Spider Lake CLP Rapid Response

Purpose

The Spider Chain of Lakes Association in cooperation with Sawyer County Land Conservation Department will conduct an early season herbicide treatment on 10 acres of Curly Leaf Pondweed (CLP). CLP was found in 2005 and has been monitored ever since. No treatment has occurred in the past, but now CLP is expanding into high traffic areas near resorts. It has now reached a level of concern. The project goals includes: 1) Early season herbicide treatment of ~ 10 acres of CLP in Big Spider Lake to control the spread; 2) Monitor the CLP throughout the year to determine efficacy of the herbicide treatment and to continue the mapping of CLP. Deliverables include: 1) The outcome of the treatment described should show evidence of declining CLP populations in treated areas and the response of native aquatic plants; 2) CLP will be mapped prior to treatment and after treatment. The lake will be surveyed for CLP in mid July through Mid August after the herbicide treatment to determine efficacy of the treatment and regrowth; 3) A map and a pre/post treatment report. Specific conditions: 1)The WDNR will be provided electronic and hard copies of all project data and or reports/plans generated; 2) Implement the pre and post treatment monitoring protocol (DNR May, 2007); 3) Summary report on the effectiveness of the treatment; 4) Obtain an APM permit prior to commencement of CLP treatement.
