Installation of Barnyard Runoff Controls in Manitowoc County

Purpose

All livestock barnyards within 300 ft. of streams that flow to Lake Michigan, in Manitowoc Co., with significant pollution ratings will be corrected.

Objective

The Manitowoc County Soil and Water Conservation Department will utilize an existing, county-wide barnyard inventory to prioritize sites to correct, starting with the highest pollution ratings. Established Manitowoc County Code and Wisconsin’s Agricultural Standards and Prohibitions will be imposed to ensure project implementation. Cost-share funds provided by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection will be used to leverage Great Lakes Restoration Initiative dollars

Outcome

Corrected barnyards will result in major reductions in nutrient loading, bacteria and pathogens levels. The project will reduce cumulative phosphorous loadings from barnyards by 80%.
