Purpose

People interested in becoming part of the frontline defense against aquatic invasive species are encouraged to attend a free July 21 workshop in Kewaunee County to receive training in how to detect the invaders. The training is set for 6 to 8 p.m. on July 21 at the East Alaska Lake boat landing in Pierce in Kewaunee County. The Manitowoc County Lakes Association and the Department of Natural Resources are sponsoring the event. Participants will learn how to detect various aquatic invasive species in their favorite lake or river, and will leave the training with a resource kit that contains educational materials, invasive species identification cards, and a plant identification hand book. One kit is available per lake. According to Brenda Nordin, DNR aquatic invasive species specialist, and Tom Ward, aquatic invasive species coordinator for Manitowoc County Lakes Association, by helping detect Eurasian water-milfoil, zebra mussels and other invaders early on, lake groups are helping the environment by deterring the establishment of invasive species and will be a more cost-effective solution in the long-run.
