RIVER ALLIANCE OF WISCONSIN: Paired Lake Study Hemlock/LaValle Sloughs

Purpose

The River Alliance of Wisconsin is sponsoring this grant to do comprehensive monitoring of two small lakes that have been isolated from the Baraboo River in Sauk County: LaValle Millpond and Hemlock Slough, in order to determine the efficacy of future off-channel mitigation projects resulting from dam removals. The study will also attempt to determine if these and other flood-plain water bodies need management, or if natural flood flow pulses can maintain the systems to their maximum biological function potential. Monitoring will include water quality, fisheries, plants, potential sensitive areas, watershed land uses, predicted phosphorus loading rates (calculated), and wildlife observations. The final report summarizing management recommendations will be published in local papers, and distributed to project partners, including the county LWCD, county parks department, Town of LaValle, DNR, USFWS, WWA and NRCS.
