Fourmile and Fivemile Creek (CW10) Watershed Planning

Purpose

Watershed plan update started in 2014. The Fourmile and Fivemile Creek Watershed is located in Wood and Portage Counties. This watershed was ranked using the Nonpoint Source Priority Watershed Selection Criteria. Based on available surface and groundwater data, the overall ranking is medium, establishing Fourmile - Fivemile Creek Watershed as a priority for future grant eligibility through the Nonpoint Source Pollution Abatement Program. In 1997, the Fourmile - Fivemile Creek Watershed was up for Priority Watershed Selection. However, due to program restructuring, no more were selected.

Groundwater resources within the watershed are ranked as a high priority for pollution control because of documented nonpoint source groundwater impacts.

Study Design

Watershed specified for planning and assessment purposes. Assessment of water quality condition in this respective county will use protocols described in WisCALM of the year of assessment. Minimum assessment work includes biological data (macroinvertebrates, fish indices), chemistry and habitat data. Additional work includes identification of priorities and goals, creating recommendations for actions, and updating narratives for watersheds and waterbodies. Assessments are to be double checked by at least one additional biologist.

Water Quality Planning
The Fourmile and Fivemile Creek Watershed is 213.96 square miles located in Wood and Portage Counties. Seventy-eight streams (654.12 miles) and twenty-four lakes and flowages (3538.98) are located in the watershed. Much of the watershed lies within the townships of Plover, Buena Vista, and Grant in Portage County. The Portage County Soil Erosion Control Plan (1986) ranked these towns as high priority for erosion control work because of both wind and water erosion.
