DANE COUNTY: Assessment of WQ & Nearshore Fish Populations in Fish, Crystal and Mud Lakes

Purpose

Dane County intends to sample water quality, algae, and near-shore fish populations, Fish, Mud and Crystal Lakes in northern Dane County. Baseline data are needed to help develop recreational use plans for a new county park in the area, and to document changes that have occurred since the lakes have been flooded since 2006 due to rising groundwater. The sampling frequency and protocol will also allow DNR partners to assess the lakes for possible 303d listing. Mud Lake will also be sampled for aquatic plants as a baseline inventory, as well as carp. The County will evaluate the possibility of doing carp control to help restore aquatic plants and cleaner water for the fishery. A final report including methods, findings and recommendations will be created and will be shared with District partners, the media and the DNR.
