Indian Creek Watershed Study Continuation

Purpose

This proposal is a continuation of a watershed study from 2013, by Jean Unmuth. See project ID SCR_17_CMP13B. Monitoring from 2013 showed qualitative habitat indices for Indian Cr. (WBIC: 1219700 SWIMS Stations: 10040127, 10040182) in poor condition, and for an unnamed tributary (WBIC: 1219300, SWIMS Station 10040719) in poor condition. Fish IBI's in Indian Cr. at the two stations were 10 and zero, respectively, and no fish were captured from the unnamed Trib WBIC 1219300. Excessive phytoplankton and filamentous algae were present in both streams in the watershed, and the watershed has excessively grazed banks in some areas, and in most areas agricultural crops with little vegetative buffer. Both streams have connected ponds on tributaries, and all other tributaries are now grassed waterways with intermittent flow. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected but not yet returned. The proposal is to collect a second year of biological and physical data as well as TP near the pour point of both streams to determine if the streams are impaired, and for watershed planning.

Objective

Indian Cr. (WBIC: 1219700 SWIMS Stations: 10040127, 10040182), and unnamed tributary of WI. River (WBIC: 1219300, SWIMS Station 10040719, and a second site with no station ID to be located closer to the pour point downstream of STH-80). The project will evaluate phosphorus for impaired waters listing in both streams (Six samples each stream). Additional monitoring will include a second year collection of biological data - A second fish sample near the pour points of both streams to supplement the first year of data for impaired waters listing. Flows and quantitative habitat will be also be collected at two sites on Indian Cr., and the pour point of unnamed trib STH-80 stations for watershed planning.

Outcome

Watershed plan document. If impaired, submittal of an impaired (303d) waters document.

Study Design

Three sites FIBI, stream flows, Quantitative habitat and six monthly phosphorus samples at two of the sites,

The Indian Creek Watershed Study was a continuation of a DNR watershed study started in 2013. Monitoring from 2013 showed qualitative habitat indices for Indian Creek in poor condition as well as for an unnamed tributary to Indian Creek. Both streams have connected ponds on tributaries, and all other tributaries are now grassed waterways with intermittent flow. Continued monitoring in 2014 was conducted to determine if the streams are impaired, and for watershed planning.
