American Bumble Bee (Bombus pensylvanicus), a State Special Concern bee, is a ground-nesting species that occurs in prairies, open fields, and farmland. Nectar plants include Cirsium (thistles), Cornus (bunchberry), Dalea (prairie clover), Echinacea (purple coneflowers), Eupatorium (Joe-pye weed), Helianthus (sunflowers), Hypericum (St. John's wort), Liatris, Silphium, Solanum, Solidago (goldenrods), and Trifolium (clovers). Nests have been found mostly ground surface among long grasses, but occasionally underground.
