Prairie Deer Mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii), a State Special Concern mammal, has been found in sand prairies, dry to dry-mesic prairies, surrogate grasslands, and barrens. It is most commonly found in the southern 2/3 of the state but may be found in low numbers in the northernmost counties. The species is active throughout the year with peak numbers occurring in the summer and early-fall.
