Stenelmis antennalis (A Riffle Beetle), a State Special Concern species, has been found in submerged wood in large sandy rivers. Riffle beetles are scrapers that belong to the Elmidae family and are most often found in cool, swift streams. They are generally quite small, are relatively poor swimmers, and move slowly in the water. Unlike most beetle families, riffle beetles reside underwater during every stage of life and breath using gills, which limits their range, as many species need highly oxygenated water.
