Description of Incident/General Comments
THE SPILL OCCURRED AT THE MAIN FARM (GAUTHIER ROAD, TOWN OF GREEN BAY, BROWN COUNTY), JUST EAST OF THE WASTE STORAGE FACILITIES DUE TO A 1.5" HOLE IN THE MANURE TRANSFER HOSE GOING FROM THE MANURE STORAGE FACILITIES TO NEIGHBORING FARM FIELDS FOR MANURE APPLICATION. THE FARM ESTIMATES THAT APPROXIMATELY 10,000 GALLONS OF MANURE WAS RELEASED TO AN UNNAMED TRIBUTARY TO SCHOOL CREEK (WBIC 5016954 AND 5016995). UPON NOTICING THE DISCHARGE, THE FARM IMMEDIATELY PLACED AN EARTHEN BERM FURTHER DOWNSTREAM THAN WHERE THE SPILL HAD MIGRATED TO, AS WELL AS ANOTHER BERM CLOSER UPSTREAM TOWARD THE PRODUCTION SITE (SEE AERIAL BELOW). IT APPEARS THAT DAIRYLAND FARMS WILL BE ABLE TO COLLECT ALL MANURE THAT WAS DISCHARGED TO THE WATERWAY, AND THERE WAS NOT EVIDENCE OF A FISH KILL HAVING OCCURRED WITHIN THE WATERWAY AT THE TIME OF MY INSPECTION. TRACTOR PUMPS WERE PLACED IN THE STREAM AT BOTH BERM LOCATIONS AND ARE PUMPING THE MANURE-LADEN WATER BACK TO THE MANURE STORAGE FACILITIES AT THE MAIN FARM. DUFEK HAS PROPOSED PLACING A BERM IN AN ADJACENT TRIBUTARY TO BACK UP CLEAN WATER TO USE AS FLUSH FOR THE AFFECTED STREAM. THE BERMS AND PUMPS WILL REMAIN IN PLACE UNTIL THE WATERWAY IS COMPLETELY FLUSHED AND AT LEAST ONE RAIN EVENT HAS OCCURRED.
