DOOR COUNTY: Door County Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program

Door County Soil & Water Conservation Department is sponsoring a project to continue Aquatic invasive species (AIS) education, prevention and planning activities throughout Door County.

Project final deliverables include: a final summary report which includes all the education, prevention and planning activities completed during the grant period, and all Clean Boats Clean Waters, Bridge Snapshot Day, and AIS inventory data entered in the SWIMS database.

Specific project activities include: 1) Conduct a boat landing sign survey to assess condition of signage at all county boat landings, private boat landings and public access areas along the Lake Michigan State Water Trail. Prioritize and resemble AIS signage or kiosks at a minimum of two launches. Host a minimum of one educational symposium to residents and provide educational materials to aquatic recreation groups. Participate in the Bait Dealer Initiative; 2) conduct a minimum of 200 hours annually of Clean Boats Clean Waters activities, participate in Landing Blitz, Drain Campaign, and Bridge Snapshot Day, provide a minimum of six AIS mapping and identification hands-on workshops, set-up booths at professional fishing tournaments, and enter all data into the SWIMS database; 3) develop bi-monthly DCIST Newsletters, use local and social media outlets to advertise volunteer opportunities and educational gatherings, visit individual landowners regarding AIS, provide guidance to municipalities and residents regarding ordinance adoption; 4) monitor and inventory AIS throughout the County to prioritize management and outreach, inventory a minimum of two townships and two streams, continue education and awareness of the GLEDN application and DCIST GPS loan program to engage volunteers to inventory AIS, and develop at a glance user documents.
