LAKESHORE NATURAL RESOURCES PARTNERSHIP INC.: City of Manitowoc Japanese Knotweed Control

Lakeshore Natural Resources Partnership is sponsoring a project to control approximately 2.8 acres of invasive Japanese knotweed at three City of Manitowoc park properties (Silver Creek Park along the Lake Michigan shoreline, Manitowoc River access park and Lincoln Park along the Little Manitowoc River). This project will build upon a region-wide effort to control invasive species. Project partners will work collaboratively with stakeholders to provide public education and outreach, use GIS-based mapping to track and monitor invasive population data, treat target invasive species, revegetate treated areas, and develop long-term control strategies.

Project final deliverables include: 1) Maintain the Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mapping strategy to monitor and assess treatment success and extent of invasive Japanese knotweed in collaboration with partner organizations; 2) Implement treatments to reduce established populations within the three City of Manitowoc park properties which includes chemical treatment and mowing; 3) Identify suitable re-vegetation sites and install native vegetation after suitable level of Japanese knotweed control is complete; 4) Facilitate coordinated, community-focused efforts with private landowners, non-profits, and local governments to identify and implement long-term control strategies; 5) Continue education and outreach efforts on invasive species issues in collaboration with partners; 6) Develop final report summarizing the project.

This scope summarizes the project detail provided in the application and does not negate tasks/deliverables described therein. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps, and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the regional Lake Biologist.
