BIG SAND LAKE PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION: Big Sand AIS Control & Prevention Project

Big Sand Lake Association, Inc. is sponsoring a grant on Big Sand Lake in Vilas County. This is the second grant (funding years 3 and 4) to help fund a five year project that will focus on Eurasian water-milfoil (EWM) management, and Aquatic Invasive Species education, prevention and monitoring. The Association will submit future grants as needed to continue the five year project. The goal is to have an 80% reduction on the EWM acreage and frequency of occurrence within vegetated areas of the Point-Intercept survey. This will allow Big Sand Lake Property Owners Association to continue management of Aquatic Invasive Species with minimal state financial assistance.

Project activities include: 1) Annual manual removal and chemical treatments of EWM; 2) Annual Pre and Post treatment monitoring and analysis; 3) Annual curly-leaf pondweed assessment; 4) Conduct chemical residual and dissolved oxygen monitoring; 5) Annual volunteer AIS, water quality and residual monitoring; 5) Clean EWM fragments from boat landing; 6) AIS educational and partnering activities; 7) Recruit volunteers and implement a Clean Boats/Clean Waters program; 8) Entry of inspection forms 3200-120 and monitoring forms onto Dept website; 9) Develop annual project report and a final report.
