SAWYER COUNTY: Sawyer County AIS Coordinator
Sawyer County is sponsoring a project which will continue the county AIS coordinator position created by the county in 2006. The position has increased awareness of invasive species throughout the county and had provided a needed resource for lake associations and shoreline owners. The guidance and expertise of an AIS Coordinator will continue to be a critical tool for lake associations, tribal partners and local units of government as they work on AIS issues.
Project goals: 1) Educate the public about AIS issues; 2) Map and monitor aquatic invasive species in Sawyer County; 3) Ensure lake associations have assistance to properly manage AIS issues on their lakes; 4) Maintain AIS database and AIS mapping program for Sawyer County; 5) Develop a Sawyer County Strategic AIS Plan.
Project deliverables include: In addition to the following tangible products, the AIS Coordinator will provide education and resources on many levels (i.e. area visitors, town officials, lake association members, etc.) Tangible products include: 1) Map of Sawyer County aquatic invasive species locations; 2) Database with AIS information including location and treatment history; 3) Purple loosestrife bio control projects; 4) Rapid response and control plans on lakes, as needed; 5) Voucher specimens; 6) Sawyer County Strategic AIS Plan.
Specific conditions for this Project: 1) The WDNR will be provided electronic and hard copies of all data and or reports/plans generated as a result of this project; 2) Provide lake maps to the lakes coordinator and enter them into SWIMS; 3) Provide brief annual progress reports to lakes coordinator; 4) Contact Erin McFarland (715-346-4978) and Laura Herman (715-365-8998) at UW-Extension to obtain assistance with training of the Clean Lakes/Clean Waters Program and AIS monitoring programs.
