POLK COUNTY LWRD: Polk County AIS Countywide Monitoring & Education Project

Polk County is sponsoring a two-year countywide AIS project to do the following activities: complete DNR Early Detection Monitoring, St. Croix River AIS monitoring, Horse Creek watershed zebra mussel monitoring, and monitoring lakes within 5 miles of EWM populations; rapid response project monitoring and technical support; education and outreach at public events, including an AIS Story Hour youth education component; CBCW training and watercraft inspections; CLMN AIS training; develop countywide \201CProtect WI Waters/It\2019s the Law\201D media campaign; and augment enforcement of Polk County\2019s Illegal-to-Transport ordinance. County staff will also collect baseline data and information for a future curlyleaf pondweed research partnership.

Deliverables include: a final report that details the methods, results, and any related management suggestions for the activities described above; monitoring data and associated GIS files; and examples of educational materials developed.

Special Conditions; 1) The Department may provide standardized methods for AIS monitoring; 2) All monitoring data must be entered into SWIMS; 3) If a new AIS infestation is found, the AIS Coordinator and County will work with the respective lake group to develop a rapid response plan and/or an AIS plan that meets the requirements of NR 198.43. Aquatic Plant Management Plans for established infestations should use the Aquatic Plant Management in Wisconsin guidance and meet the NR 198.43 requirements, as well, in order to be AIS control grant-eligible.

This scope is intended to summarize the detailed project scope provided in the application and does not supersede those application tasks/deliverables. Data, records, reports, and education materials, including GIS-based maps and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the regional lake coordinator.
