The first boater (powerboat) lives in Duluth, but also has a place on Madeline Island in the Apostle Islands. He was launching his boat to take to the Madeline Island Marina for winterization. He also boats on the St. Louis River. His boat was a 26-foot to 34-foot, DNR-type boat (utility-type boat).
2). The second boater (fishermen, husband and wife couple) were aware of the CBCW program. They mentioned that fish catches are down this year. They only catch one or two fish on each outing, and others have said the same thing. Their boat was an 18-foot whaler.
3). The third boaters (powerboat) were staff from Pikes Bay Marina. One of them said that it was the last boat to pull out for the winter. (The rest are up on stilts and zap-wrapped.) It was a small, 14-foot to 16-foot runabout.

*First boater (powerboater) is from Southeastern WI and first time on Lake Superior. Said his wife is a science teacher, so well-versed with AIS prevention.
*Second boater said he always pulls the plug, inspects around bottom of boat and waits at least two weeks before entering another waterbody.
*One member of the fourth party of boaters was Reed Saam (715-779-3750), a Fisheries Biologist with Red Cliff. He said that one of the fisheries boats was in Saxon Harbor, prepared to do a sturgeon study when the storm hit on Monday night. He said the boat was found 30 miles from shore.
*The fifth boater (powerboat) was already powerwashing his boat when I approached him. He then tilted his motor to drain water from motor. He said that the only way to truly stop the spread is to have enclosed treatment facilities that boaters have to enter and exit before dropping in at any given waterbody. I confirmed with the local creel officer from the Wisconsin DNR that the fisherman likely was referring to protected waters around local shoals in the Apostles where fish species spawn.
3). The fourth boater mentioned that he gets a "tamarack scum" on his hull every time he leaves the St. Croix River. I'm not sure what that term means.
4). The sixth boater (powerboat) asked where to discard the plants/weeds that he pulled from his boat. I said in the trash, however, there aren't any trash bins at the Bayfield landing. Question: Does the city clean up the weeds/debris at the landing ramp and near the power wash station?
5). Question: Are weeds more likely to attach to trailers with rollers or trailers with boards? Does it make any difference regardless?
6). The 10th boater had a Craig Cat: a small, pontoon, catamaran-like boat. It was similar to a small, two-person paddle boat that you can rent by the hour to paddle around on a small inland lake.
7). The 12th boater is active and a member of the Iron River Lake Association. He said that the association had gotten a handle on Eurasian Water Milfoil on the Pike Chain of Lakes in Price County, Wisconsin, until this spring, which was warm, and caused it to thrive again.
8). One boater suggested a valet service at the busiest landings. How it be administered, and by whom?
9). The 32nd boater has recently been boating in the open pit mines in Minnesota. He said that they are crystal clear. Question: Would the mines ever have the threat of invasive species?

He said many agencies were there doing AIS inspections: DNR, sheriff's office, etc. He said that there were even sniffing dogs.
2). The fifth boater lives near and spends time on Birch Lake in Vilas County near Minocqua, Wisconsin. He said that he remembers many years ago when there were a few rusty crayfish, and now they are so numerous that they dominate the lake ecology. He also said that the local lake association is using alfalfa to encourage native vegetation to take control. Apparently, when alfalfa decomposes, it provides nutrients for natural vegetation to grow.
3). The eighth boater was a large (long), 30+ foot, powerboat that tried unsuccessfully to power launch his boat on to his trailer. He had a powerful inboard/outboard that completely stirred up the lake bottom at the landing. (It was terrible in regards to preventing the spread of invasive plants.)

The fifth boater also mentioned that he caught lake trout that were spawning (with spawn?) in July. Unusual for this time of year.

He said that if you fall overboard in the Illinois River you run the risk of being electrocuted from the electric fences set up to control Asian Carp. He said that it makes it hard for the Coast Guard to rescue boaters who fall into the water.
2). The second boater (powerboat) typically boats on Lake Winnebago (near Oshkosh). He said that the beaches there are littered with zebra mussels.
3). The seventh boater (jetskis) mentioned that jetskiers get a bad wrap, even though they are as environmentally conscious and compliant as other boaters. He said that jetskis are only allowed around Madeline Island in the Apostle Islands, but not the rest of the Apostle Islands. 3). The 10th boater (dinghy) said that aquatic invasive species enforcement in La Crosse, Wisconsin, is pretty strict. He said that the DNR staff are always standing by to make sure boaters drain everything. Otherwise, they ticket boaters. The fourth boater mentioned that he is active in Florida with the Clean Marinas Program. He said that the lionfish is invasive in similar ways to our Asian Carp. Like here in the Midwest, Florida is trying to make lionfish a popular item on menus.
2). The fifth boater recently was on Island Lake north of Duluth about 15 minutes. He said that he didn't pull any invasive species from Island Lake, but did pull some zebra mussels from the Duluth/Superior harbor a couple of years ago when his boat was docked in the harbor for three days. He also worked for a netting company that focused on zebra mussels.
3). The seventh boater (powerboat) was recently in North Center Lake in Chisago County, Minnesota. She said that there was a DNR staffer present, who inspected her boat, and pulled some weeds. She also said that they found a small snail attached to a bumper in the Apostle Islands Marina in Bayfield recently (not sure if invasive).

The first boater (powerboat) said that she worked for CBCW for the WDNR about 10 years ago. She worked in southwest Wisconsin, and said she found many zebra mussels back then.
2). The third boater (fishermen) said that spiny water fleas are thick (several blocks long) on the west side of Madeline Island in the Apostle Islands. They said that they were fishing in about 20 feet of water when they snagged them. I took samples from their downriggers. They said that they clog the fishing lines.
3). The third boater also said that he's noticed spiny water fleas throughout the Apostle Islands, particularly south of Long Island. (He trolls in less than 30 feet of water.)
4). The fourth boater said that he noticed two, worm-like insects that were cream-colored, and about one-inch long on a lake trout that he caught off of Sand Island. He wasn't sure what it was, but wonders if it is immature sea lamprey. The fish looked unhealthy too with bulgy eyes and a limp tail.
5). The fourth boater also asked if we can install a sign at the power wash state that states "Washing area only. Please do not park here."

I also wondered whether there is a trend with boaters that the faster, more "need for speed" boaters has less conscience for the environment.
3). The third boater said that she saw a strand of Eurasian Water Milfoil (she thinks) near the campground at Oak Island in the Apostle Islands. She said that there was no other evidence of plant life around. She said the bottom was sandy otherwise.
4). The eighth boater (jetski) was in Webb Lake in Burnett County, Wisconsin, in the past five days. The boater said that it was a private landing, and that no boat inspector was present.

3). The 11th boater (powerboat/fisherman) said that he has been in the inter-coastal waterways in Florida recently, and said that the state of Florida has a great CBCW program. (He wasn't aware of which AIS are prevalent there, but lauded the program.)
4). The 12th boater (fisherman) said that he has fished on Mud Hen Lake near the town of Siren, where there is a camera installed to catch violators. Any boater that's videotaped leaving the lake with weeds attached is mailed a violation ticket. 2). One fisherman commented that zebra mussels are rampant in Lake Michigan. He thinks that salmon in Lake Superior are unable to eat zooplankton because of zebra mussels, and biologists want it that way. (They want to see an increase in the number of lake trout.)
3). One boater mentioned that he knew of the first "saltie" that was ultimately responsible for the spread of AIS today. (The year was 1965.)
General observations at Bayfield landing:
1). No trash can(s) or compost bins(s).
2). Several boaters complained about high ramp fee ($12), compared to $5-6 at other launch sites.
3). AIS prevention signs facing launching ramp. Should there be other signs facing docking area?
