The third boater (fishermen) suggested having the "Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers" signs posted towards boaters who are entering and leaving. 3). The water is really stirred up outside of the breakwater at the landing today.00000000000000000000

The first boater (fisherman) was a fishing technician with the Forest Service. He said that he does a lot of work with invasive species.00000000000000000000
120922909Adam Haecker9/28/2015 12:00 PM9/28/2015 4:30 PM4.504.5Lake Superior -- Second Landing - Reykdal Rd10019295Ashland1340402210040010/05/20151). Note: There is a boat wash area at Second Landing in Ashland, but no hose attachments. One boater that I talked to said that it hasn't been operational all summer.00000000000000000000
120752125Adam Haecker9/27/2015 9:00 AM9/27/2015 5:00 PM808Lake Superior -- Loonsfoot Landing - 30th Ave Superior10019047Douglas124124160114423130009/28/20151). Very foggy conditions nearshore today. Mid 50s. 2). The fifth boat were duck hunters. (It's day 2 of duck hunting season, according to the hunters.) 3). The 13th boater refused to put the "Aquatic Hitchikers" sticker on his boat or trailer. It's not because he didn't support CBCW, but he said that stickers are a mess to remove later. Is that true? Do they typically peel unevenly? If so, is there another alternative adhesive?00000000000000000000
120752019Adam Haecker9/26/2015 8:30 AM9/26/2015 4:30 PM808Lake Superior -- Loonsfoot Landing - 30th Ave Superior10019047Douglas147183210019480201009/28/20151). The fourth boater (fisherman) said that he puts chlorine tablets in his livewell to clean it (and eliminate fish odors). He said that it's simple, and all fishermen should do it to help the cause against AIS. 2). Dense fog today. Mid 60s. Fog advisory for nearshore.00000000000000000000

The third boater (powerboat) had socks on his rollers for his trailer. He said that it prevents scuff marks on his hull. I wonder if it prevents AIS from adhering to the rollers and hull too.00000000000000000000
120580260Adam Haecker9/14/2015 11:30 AM9/14/2015 4:00 PM4.504.5Lake Superior -- Bayfield City Boat Launch10019622Bayfield130440136031009/21/20151). The third boater (powerboat) had a cabin on Lynx Lake in Vilas County. He sold the property in 2012, and wonders about the fate of the lake since then. It has a public access.00000000000000000000

The fifth boater was hunting geese. 2). The 10th boater (fisherman) works for AMI Consulting Engineers in Superior. The company has a Marine Structures Division, which he said manufactures equipment for AIS prevention. 3). The 11th boater is a member of the Twin Ports Walleye Association. 4). Many boaters today mentioned that on Monday, Sept. 7 (Labor Day) there were lots of plant matter all around the Loon's Foot landing. The debris was essentially gone on Tuesday, however. Boaters and myself wondered if the City of Duluth Public Works Department cleans up the landing on a regular basis(?). If so, where do they take the plant matter? 5). Suggestion: Loon's Foot has a recycling bin/container for monofilament line (fishing line). Is it possible to get one installed at the landing in Bayfield and the landing in Washburn? 6). Suggestion tip: One of the main challenges that I've had all season is memorizing the boaters that I've talked to that day when it is busy. I imagine other CBCW inspectors experienced the same thing. One tip though is to memorize one thing that is unusual with each group. For example, is one person wearing something unusual? Is there something unique or different about their boat? If you log one unusual thing to memory, that helps greatly in knowing who you've talked to already that day.00000000000000000000

The ninth boater (fisherman) had a built-in live well in the floor of his boat. It allows for extra storage. 2). The 15th boater (fisherman) claims that this is the worst year of fishing in 17 years. He wonders if it is attributed to AIS. 3). The 17th boater (fisherman) blamed the shipping industry for AIS. He said that the ore boats should be fined for any violations, and not have the fines passed on to the boaters.00000000000000000000

The first boater (powerboat) claimed that it is the bass fishermen that have caused the entire problem with AIS. It's the fishing tournaments, when the bass fishermen are jumping from lake to lake that is the root of the AIS problem. 2). The third boater (fisherman) is concerned about VHS. He said that there was a lot of publicity about it initially, but now you hardly hear anything about it. What's the current status of VHS, he wonders?00000000000000000000

The second boater (fisherman) is a member of the Wisconsin Anglers Association. He said that he doesn't understand why Native Americans are catching their harvest of fish in nets around Bayfield during the spawning season. He said that it doesn't allow the juvenile fish to mature and reproduce.00000000000000000000

The first boater (sailboat) has a ballast system for stabilizing his boat. He was asking what to do with the ballast water if it has been sitting in his tanks for a few days. 2). The City of Bayfield installed a new sign at the washing area that says "Boat washdown area only. 15 min. max. No unattended parking allowed. Violators will be cited and/or towed. City of Bayfield Police Department" 3). There isn't a 'No Powerloading' sign at the Bayfield landing. 4). The 10th boater (fisherman) said that he caught spiny water fleas while fishing today in the Apostle Island. He didn't say exactly where. 5). The 14th boater has been in the Fox River near Appleton, Wisconsin, recently. She said that they are slowly cleaning it up, and are putting markers up to indicate where boaters can and cannot go.00000000000000000000

Aslo wants no size and 5 a day limit. Also said see's relentless netting by Tribes and commerical licenses and wish to see this stop. He also talked about the steps for prevention of AIS himself. 00000000000000000000

The third boater (fisherman) thinks that Minnesota has done away with the stickers that say Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers . If so, why? 2). The seventh boater heard that there is spiny water fleas in Lake Vermillion in Minnesota.00000000000000000000

The third boater (powerboat) mentioned/suggested that the parking permit slip have the daily amount on it. Otherwise, boaters have to walk back to the permit drop box to read the fee. 2). The sixth boater (powerboat) is involved with controlling Eurasian Water Milfoil in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He said that EWM used to be a serious threat to the Beaver Dam area, but with enough volunteers and enough hand-pulling, they have controlled it. He also said many people confuse EWM with Coon's Tail. 3). The seventh boater said that there was a tug boat that came from Superior, Wisconsin, several years ago, and sat in the Bayfield marina until November. When the boat was pulled out for winterization, it was full of zebra mussels. Is the marina that warm? 4). The 12th boater (scuba divers) dived the Fin McCool and the Fedora in the Apostle Islands. Good news: They said that they didn't find any AIS, but did see a white crayfish. It was on its back. They wondered if it was faded and/or just the shell.00000000000000000000

There were three vehicles parked in front of the power wash station, which blocked access for boaters needing to clean their boats. They weren't parked illegally, however, because there isn't a yellow-painted strip on the curb or a no parking sign. Chief Fangman said he will talk to a Tom (head of Bayfield Public Works) about installing a sign. 2). The seventh boater (powerboat) informed me that the fish hatchery between Bayfield and Washburn has invasive species on display. He also said that he sees a lot of mudpuppies around Port Superior.00000000000000000000

The seventh boater (powerboat) does some volunteering work with Boy Scouts. She said that a group of Eagle Scouts went to Jarvis Lake in Ramsey County, Minnesota, and destroyed a bed of Asian Carp eggs from the lake bottom last winter. 2). The 19th boater has done work with the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation in Marquette, Michigan. The mission of this non-profit is to preserve and enhance five U.S. national parks on Lake Superior, including the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. He said that the organization is currently working on treating ballast water to stop the spread of AIS. He said that the only way to truly stop the spread is to have enclosed treatment facilities that boaters have to enter and exit before dropping in at any given waterbody. Boaters would back in, get a flush, dry and then enter a waterbody. Question: How would the treatment facilities be funded at every landing at every lake?00000000000000000000

The third boater is a member of the Manitowish Chain of Lakes Association in Wisconsin. 2). The fifth boater (fisherman) mentioned that there are a few "fish sanctuaries" around the Apostle Islands, but didn't know what that designation means. I confirmed with the local creel officer from the Wisconsin DNR that the fisherman likely was referring to protected waters around local shoals in the Apostles where fish species spawn. 3). The fourth boater mentioned that he gets a "tamarack scum" on his hull every time he leaves the St. Croix River. I'm not sure what that term means. 4). The sixth boater (powerboat) asked where to discard the plants/weeds that he pulled from his boat. I said in the trash, however, there aren't any trash bins at the Bayfield landing. Question: Does the city clean up the weeds/debris at the landing ramp and near the power wash station? 5). Question: Are weeds more likely to attach to trailers with rollers or trailers with boards? Does it make any difference regardless? 6). The 10th boater had a Craig Cat: a small, pontoon, catamaran-like boat. It was similar to a small, two-person paddle boat that you can rent by the hour to paddle around on a small inland lake. 7). The 12th boater is active and a member of the Iron River Lake Association. He said that the association had gotten a handle on Eurasian Water Milfoil on the Pike Chain of Lakes in Price County, Wisconsin, until this spring, which was warm, and caused it to thrive again. 8). One boater suggested a valet service at the busiest landings. How it be administered, and by whom? 9). The 32nd boater has recently been boating in the open pit mines in Minnesota. He said that they are crystal clear. Question: Would the mines ever have the threat of invasive species? 10). The 36th boater (sailboat) was recently on Lake Harriet in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. He said that it was very clean - thanks to CBCW crew.00000000000000000000

The ninth boater (powerboat) works in the marine industry on Lake Michigan. He occasionally scuba dives the shipwrecks on Lake Michigan, and said zebra mussels have pretty much ruined the dive sites. 2). The 14th boater (powerboat) mentioned that she is a CBCW inspector in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. She does the inspections through the Rhinelander Chain of Lakes Association. She said that the chain of lakes don't have Eurasian Water Milfoil (and for the most part is clean), but does have rusty crayfish. 3). The 14th boater also suggested that there should be more power wash stations at landings. She suggested using a pumping system that recycles water from the waterbody itself. 1). The ninth boater (powerboat) works in the marine industry on Lake Michigan. He occasionally scuba dives the shipwrecks on Lake Michigan, and said that zebra mussels have pretty much ruined the dive sites. 2). The 14th boater (powerboat) mentioned that she is a CBCW inspector in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. She does the inspections through the Rhinelander Chain of Lakes Association. She said that the chain doesn't have Eurasian Water Milfoil (and for the most part is clean), but does have rusty crayfish. 3). The second boater (powerboat) was in the St. Croix River near Hastings, Minnesota, one week ago. He said many agencies were there doing AIS inspections: DNR, sheriff's office, etc. He said that there were even sniffing dogs. 2). The fifth boater lives near and spends time on Birch Lake in Vilas County near Minocqua, Wisconsin. He said that he remembers many years ago when there were a few rusty crayfish, and now they are so numerous that they dominate the lake ecology. He also said that the local lake association is using alfalfa to encourage native vegetation to take control. Apparently, when alfalfa decomposes, it provides nutrients for natural vegetation to grow. 3). The eighth boater was a large (long), 30+ foot, powerboat that tried unsuccessfully to power launch his boat on to his trailer. He had a powerful inboard/outboard that completely stirred up the lake bottom at the landing. (It was terrible in regards to preventing the spread of invasive plants.) 4). The first boater (fisherman) said that it would be great to have a power wash station at Loon's Foot, but it gets abused by ATV users. They come to the landing at night and get a free wash, and clog up the drains in the process. He said that people often abuse using the dumpster on site as well. He knows that it is for the landing only, but outsiders will dump their personal garbage, sofas, chairs, couches, etc. in the dumpster. He worries that the City of Superior will take the dumpster because of it, and then boaters won't have anything to wash their boats. 2). The sixth boater (fisherman) made a couple of points: one, the native crawfish population on Robinson Lake (near Barnes) has crashed recently, and he was wondering why? Perhaps by an invasion of an AIS?; two, he believes that AIS is spreading via waterfowl as much as it is by boaters. He said that birds are spreading the seeds that get stuck on their feet (more so than through ingestion and then defection). 3). The eighth boater (fisherman) said that he was confused by the law in Minnesota vs. the law in Wisconsin in regards to driving with the plug in vs. the plug out. He said that both states should have the same law. 4). The 16th boater (powerboat) suggested that the most recent CBCW stickers should include the year: 2015.00000000000000000000

Consequently, her grandchildren swam in the creek shortly thereafter. She simply thinks that the DNR should post notices when any spraying is done. 7). The 12th boater (powerboat) said that the cruise fleet from Copper Harbor, Michigan, gets serviced at the Washburn Marina every year. She said that when they lift the boats out of the water, they are full of zebra mussels. 8). The 12th boater also said that she and her husband boat on an inland lake in Wisconsin (Pine Point?). The landing there has a speaker system that relays the message about preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species.00000000000000000000

The 10th boater mentioned the need for a wash station at Loon's Foot. He said that there is a really nice one at McQuade Small Craft Harbor, along the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. The harbor is located about half-way between Duluth and Two Harbors. He said that the wash station there is high-pressure and hotter than 180 degrees. 2). The 17th boater said that there are many spiny water fleas along the landing docks at Loon's Foot. (They blow in from the open water - just outside the landing bay.) 3). The 17th boater also mentioned that he has been fishing in the Cut Foot Sioux Lake in Minnesota recently, and said that Chinese Mystery Snails line the floor of the lake bed.00000000000000000000

The fourth boater mentioned that he is active in Florida with the Clean Marinas Program. He said that the lionfish is invasive in similar ways to our Asian Carp. Like here in the Midwest, Florida is trying to make lionfish a popular item on menus. 2). The fifth boater recently was on Island Lake north of Duluth about 15 minutes. He said that he didn't pull any invasive species from Island Lake, but did pull some zebra mussels from the Duluth/Superior harbor a couple of years ago when his boat was docked in the harbor for three days. He also worked for a netting company that focused on zebra mussels. 3). The seventh boater (powerboat) was recently in North Center Lake in Chisago County, Minnesota. She said that there was a DNR staffer present, who inspected her boat, and pulled some weeds. She also said that they found a small snail attached to a bumper in the Apostle Islands Marina in Bayfield recently (not sure if invasive). 4). The first boater (powerboat) said that she worked for CBCW for the WDNR about 10 years ago. She worked in southwest Wisconsin, and said she found many zebra mussels back then. 2). The third boater (fishermen) said that spiny water fleas are thick (several blocks long) on the west side of Madeline Island in the Apostle Islands. They said that they were fishing in about 20 feet of water when they snagged them. I took samples from their downriggers. They said that they clog the fishing lines. 3). The third boater also said that he's noticed spiny water fleas throughout the Apostle Islands, particularly south of Long Island. (He trolls in less than 30 feet of water.) 4). The fourth boater said that he noticed two, worm-like insects that were cream-colored, and about one-inch long on a lake trout that he caught off of Sand Island. He wasn't sure what it was, but wonders if it is immature sea lamprey. The fish looked unhealthy too with bulgy eyes and a limp tail. 5). The fourth boater also asked if we can install a sign at the power wash state that states "Washing area only. Please do not park here." 6). The tenth boater (sailboat) just came from Pelican Lake in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. There was a local DNR staff person there to power-wash his boat at more than 180 degrees F.00000000000000000000

The first boater (fisherman) asked whether it is a state law in Wisconsin to drive without a boat plug installed? He claims that it is the law in Minnesota. 2). The second boater (powerboat) didn't want anything to do with me. I wondered if it was my approach, but also realized that he had a go-fast (aka cigarette) boat. I also wondered whether there is a trend with boaters that the faster, more "need for speed" boaters has less conscience for the environment. 3). The third boater said that she saw a strand of Eurasian Water Milfoil (she thinks) near the campground at Oak Island in the Apostle Islands. She said that there was no other evidence of plant life around. She said the bottom was sandy otherwise. 4). The eighth boater (jetski) was in Webb Lake in Burnett County, Wisconsin, in the past five days. The boater said that it was a private landing, and that no boat inspector was present. 5). I found my first sample of Eurasian Water Milfoil (I think) today. I bagged it, and showed it to my direct supervisors, Pam Roberts, NCWMA, and Andy Teal, Bayfield County AIS Coordinator, on June 29.00000000000000000000

The sixth boater that I talked to said that the south end of Chequamegon Bay is full of Eurasian Water Milfoil. (He lives on the lake in Ashland.) 2). The sixth boater also said that he thinks that strictly inboard motors are more susceptible to zebra mussel infestation because they get fully in to the engine block. He said he knows of an acid treatment to get rid of them. 3). The 11th boater (powerboat/fisherman) said that he has been in the inter-coastal waterways in Florida recently, and said that the state of Florida has a great CBCW program. (He wasn't aware of which AIS are prevalent there, but lauded the program.) 4). The 12th boater (fisherman) said that he has fished on Mud Hen Lake near the town of Siren, where there is a camera installed to catch violators. The second boater (scuba diver) said that he has never noticed any zebra mussels attached to any shipwrecks in Lake Superior. He did dive in Lake Michigan a couple of years ago, and noticed them attached to a shipwreck there. 2). The ninth boater (sailboat) said that there needs to be a power washer at every landing. He is thankful that there is one in Bayfield, but would like to see one at every landing. 3). The 10th boater (powerboat) said that he has a customized bilge that circulates water internally in the boat and discharges it before landing. Is there something like this bilge on the market? 4). The 11th boater (powerboat) was wooden and custom-built. Questions: Do wooden boats attract zebra mussels like fiberglass boats? Is there a particular application or coating that could be applied to fiberglass boats to deter mussels? Have researchers conducted lab tests and studies to determine what materials most attracts or least attracts mussels to adhere to surfaces? 5). The Washburn Marina harbormaster (Tom Mager) asked about portable power washers, and whether the Bayfield County Land & Water Conservation Department would be using them this year (?). He said that the Washburn Marina might be getting a permanent one installed with the remodel of the marina in the fall (2015). 2). The first boater (sailboat) was talking about CAFOs in the Green Bay area, and how the runoff from farms has lead to a dead zone the size of Chequamegon Bay on Lake Superior every fall (in Lake Michigan). Questions: How do dead zones affect invasive species? Does phosphorous and nitrogen adversely affect AIS? 3). Weather: Cloudy with on and off showers. Temperature in the mid 60s.00000000000000000000

The third boater of the day (fisherman) said that he's been on the Eau Claire Chain of Lakes recently. He talked to a CBCW inspector there, but didn't have to pull any weeds from his boat. 2). Talked to the harbormaster (Tom Mager), who showed me an infiltration system that the Washburn Marina uses to filter water and scum on the hull of the boats. Tom said that it's the only filtration system that he knows of that is used on Lake Superior, including Duluth/Superior. The marina also has several plates in the harbor that attract zebra mussels. He said that the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service provided them. 3). There is no power washer or cleaning station at the Washburn Marina, but one is coming this fall (2015), when the marina is being remodeled. 4). The seventh boater that I talked to (fisherman) said that he knows of other fishermen who confuse the Ruffe with walleye yearlings. He said that the fishermen kill the Ruffe, and throw them up on shore. 5). The seventh fisherman also wondered about controlling waterfowl that spread invasive species. How do you keep pelicans, swans and geese that eat AIS from spreading it? 6). The seventh fisherman also has fished on Mille Lacs in Minnesota. He said that the lake is filled with zebra mussels (in the water and on shore), as well as spiny water fleas. 7). A couple of boaters (fishermen) were aware that the Mississippi River Lock at St. Anthony Falls in Minneapolis recently closed to stop the spread of invasive carp (Bighead and Silver).00000000000000000000

The third boater also mentioned that he understands that there might be a new law that makes it mandatory to keep your boat out of the water for three days in between water bodies. 3). The fourth boater that I talked to today (sailboat) said that he has an antifol (foliage?) application on his hull, which prevents scum growth and other bacteria from adhering.
