Johnson Controls International, plc/Tyco Fire Products, LP (JCI/Tyco) owns and operates a facility in Marinette, Wisconsin (Marinette County) that manufactures fire extinguishers filled with dry chemicals and other fire-suppressant agents. The extinguisher bodies are made by expanding metal disks into cylinders. After expansion, the cylinders are washed and a rust inhibitor is applied. The cylinders are then welded, washed and painted in an enclosed booth with an extreme performance powder coat paint using an automated sprayer or a hand sprayer, depending on the manufacturing line. The cylinders are then filled with a fire suppressant agent. Carbon dioxide (CO2) cartridges used in the extinguishers are coated with corrosion resistant paint in a spray booth using an electrostatic rotating disk. Paint from rejected pieces is stripped away using a potassium hydroxide tank. There are three dry chemical Firefighting Agent manufacturing plants at the Stanton Street Plant site. The Foray Plant makes class ABC Firefighting Agents and the B-Plant and Multi-Agent Plant both make class BC Agents. Particulate recovery and control devices are located throughout the facility to support the processes involved in manufacturing the powders. Natural gas fired boilers with propane backup (converted from coal firing) provide steam and heat and the facility has two other natural gas boilers only plus numerous natural gas convenience space heaters, as well as process heaters. Marinette County is designated as an attainment area for all pollutants.
