BC Organics, LLC (BCO), processes manure from approximately ten local farms. Manure from the nearest farms, Weise Brothers and Country Aire, are piped directly into the facility, while manure from the other farms is trucked in. Manure is received into one of two open-air concrete holding pits where bedding material (either sand or fiber) is allowed to settle out. From the holding pits, manure is piped into one of 16 digester tanks. The digester tanks are set up in groups of four, each known as a pod. Manure can be transferred from one tank to another within a pod, or from one pod to another, as needed. The digesters are maintained at approximately 100 °F using heat provided by three (3) natural gas-fired boilers. Each pod is equipped with a blower to draw raw biogas from the tanks and send it to either the to the gas conditioning system or the flare. The gas conditioning system treats the raw biogas to produce pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG). The treatment process includes an iron sponge for hydrogen sulfide removal, removal of moisture and carbon dioxide, and compression. RNG meeting the correct specifications can be injected into a pipeline. Biogas not treated by the gas conditioning system and biogas that does not meet RNG specifications after treatment is sent to the flare. The non-gaseous material remaining after the anaerobic digestion of the manure, known as digestate, is removed from the digesters and sent through a screw press to separate the liquids and solids. The concentrated liquid digestate can be recycled back into the digesters, sent back to farms for use as a fertilizer, or treated to produce clean water. The solids are sent to one of two rotary drum dryers, dried to a specific moisture content, and stockpiled to return to the local farms for use as animal bedding. The facility mainly produces greenhouse gases (GHGs), but it also produces particulate matter (PM), particulate matter less than 10 micrometers in diameter (PM10), particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and various hazardous air pollutants (HAPs).
