Impaired Water - Little Menomonee River (Little Menomonee)
Milwaukee, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin

0.00 - 9.00
9.00
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
This portion of the Little Menomonee River was placed on the impaired waters list for Creosote in 1998. Sediment removal and rerouting have cleaned up the creosote and this listing is proposed for removal in the 2022 cycle, after groundwater PAH sources are determined. High bacteria levels (fecal coliform) were found during the 2010 evaluation. Additional evaluations of bacteria (E. coli) in the 2022 cycle confirmed high levels. The Milwaukee River TMDL restoration plan covers these listings and was approved in 2018. This river segment was evaluated for phosphorus and biology every two years from 2012 to 2024. Phosphorus levels are too high for healthy plant, bug, and fish communities. The phosphorus listing is also covered by the Milwaukee River TMDL restoration plan. Elevated temperature and chloride levels were found during the 2016 evaluation. This water is covered by the Menomonee River Watershed Nine Key Plan, approved in January 2022.

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2012 listing cycle, and total phosphorus sample data exceed 2012 WisCALM listing criteria for the fish and aquatic life use, and biological impairment was observed (i.e. at least one macroinvertebrate or fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) scored in the poor condition category). See 2012 MMSD TP assessment results.

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2014 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data overwhelmingly exceed 2014 WisCALM listing criteria for the Fish and Aquatic Life use and biological impairment was observed (i.e. at least one macroinvertebrate or fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) scored in the poor condition category).

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2020 listing cycle; new total phosphorus sample data exceeded 2020 WisCALM listing criteria for the Aquatic Life use, however, available biological data do not indicate impairment (i.e. no macroinvertebrate or fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) scored in the "poor" condition category).

Date

Impaired Water Notes
Little Menomonee River is impaired by recreational restrictions due to high fecal coliform bacteria. High fecal coliform bacteria levels (exceedances of 400 cfu/100 mL, 47% of the time on an annual basis and 30% seasonally) restrict recreational uses. According to local studies, 75% of fecal coliform load cannot be accounted for and could be caused by illicit connections and leaking laterals.

Impaired Water Notes
The contaminated sediments in the stream have been removed and the stream rerouted away from the contaminated site. The fourth 5-year review of the clean up shows successful remediation in terms of the sediment. This water is proposed for delisting in 2022 after groundwater PAH sources are determined.
