Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
Lake Monona was originally listed as impaired in 1998. This water is currently listed due to PCBs in lake bottom sediment. There is a specific fish consumption guidline for PCBs in fish tissue for this lake. The lake has zebra mussels, eurasian watermilfoil, and curly leaf pondweed.
Lake Monona was evaluated for phosphorus and algae every two years between 2012 and 2024. Phosphorus levels were found to be too high, which was reflected in algal blooms. The TMDL restoration plan was approved in 2011.
Lake Monona was placed under a special fish consumption advisory for PFOS in 2020; this lake had a listing of PFOS in fish tissue placed on the 2022 Impaired Waters List.Pollutant

Impaired Water Notes
Recent sampling by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources shows elevated PFOS in fish tissue and surface water in those waterways. PFOS is one of many per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFOS detection is the driving force behind establishing the fish consumption advisory for Starkweather Creek and Lake Monona in Dane County.
