Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
Castle Rock Creek was originally listed as impaired in 1998 due degraded habitat caused by sediment/TSS. A TMDL is approved for this water, it is a 4a.
This water was assessed during the 2012 listing cycle, and total phosphorus sample data exceed 2012 WisCALM listing criteria for the fish and aquatic life use, but biological data was not available.
This water was assessed during the 2018 listing cycle; based on 2018 WisCALM listing criteria for the Fish and Aquatic Life use, available biological data did not indicate impairment (i.e. no macroinvertebrate or fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) scored in the "poor" condition category). Further biological monitoring is recommended.
Assessments during the 2020 listing cycle showed fish sample data were in good condition. Pollutant

Castle Rock Creek (also known as Fennimore Creek) (WBIC 1211300) from mile 15.5 to mile 26 and the entire 4 mile length of Gunderson Valley Creek (WBIC 1212600), a tributary to Castle Rock Creek are included on Wisconsin’s 2002 section 303(d) list of impaired waters.1 The streams are located in northeastern Grant County, Wisconsin and are part of the Blue River Watershed. The Blue River flows to the Lower Wisconsin River. Castle Rock Creek downstream from the impaired segment is designated as a state Outstanding Resource Water. Both streams were listed as a high priority for TMDL development on the October 2002 303(d) list.
Castle Rock Creek was listed as impaired due to degraded habitat due to sedimentation that limited the stream’s coldwater fishery to the extent that the stream’s designated use was not met. In addition, Castle Rock Creek has a substantial amount of filamentous algae that is not found in nearby trout streams.

Impaired Water Notes
Castle Rock Creek (WBIC = 1211300); Stream miles 17.14 - 21.38:
Castle Rock Creek is already on the 303(d) list for habitat degradation caused by sedimentation and has an approved TMDL. The proposal for phosphorus listing is based on one "poor" macroinvertebrate IBI taken in 2001. A year later, from the same site, another macroinvertebrate IBI was taken and showed a 4.03 (fair). Four other macroinvertebrate samples taken from the creek showed "fair" ratings. Once again, we cannot support the use of 1 selective data point to provide a scientifically defensible reason for listing. Therefore, our recommeudatiou is to remove the addition of phosphorus as an impairment from Castle Rock Creek from the draft list of impaired waters.
