Impaired Water - Lake Tomah (Tomah Lake)
Monroe County, Wisconsin
LW29
1342100
245.49
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
This water was originally listed in 1998 due to eutrophication and elevated pH impairments of the fish and aquatic life use caused by excess total phosphorus.

Evaluations every two-year cycle from 2012 to 2024 confirmed excess phosphorus and algal growth.

Impaired Water Notes
The 2002 data documentation sheet indicates that there are violations of pH standard and eutrophication from nutrients. The nutrient loading is from nonpoint sources of pollution to Lake Tomah, causing algae blooms that occur throughout the summer.
As of 2002, lakes condition monitoring was conducted in 1998 (WDNR) - Monthly water chemistry sampling from June through September using Ambient Lakes Protocol. Surface field pH was above 9.0 on two of eight summer sampling dates in 1998.Hard copy water chemistry data from Lake Tomah is in the Lake Biologist files at the Eau Claire WDNR Service Center. Electronic data is available from SLOH web site and SWIMS. March 27, 2002

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2012 listing cycle, and total phosphorus and chlorophyll sample data exceed 2012 WisCALM listing criteria for the fish and aquatic life and recreation uses. Based on the 2012 assessment, a recreation use impairment (excess algal growth) caused by total phosphorus was added to this listing.

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2014 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data overwhelmingly exceed 2014 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and exceeded Fish and Aquatic Life use, however, chlorophyll data only exceeds REC thresholds.
Date

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2016 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data overwhelmingly exceeded 2016 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and Fish and Aquatic Life use, and chlorophyll data exceeded only REC thresholds.

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2020 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data overwhelmingly exceeded 2020 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and Fish and Aquatic Life use, and chlorophyll data also exceeded REC and FAL thresholds. Based on the most updated information, no change in existing impaired waters listing is needed.

Impaired Water Notes
This water was assessed during the 2022 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data overwhelmingly exceeded 2022 WisCALM listing thresholds for the Recreation use and Fish and Aquatic Life use, and chlorophyll data also exceeded REC thresholds. Based on the most updated information, no change in existing impaired waters listing is needed.
