Impaired Water Notes
This stream Entire stream (8 miles) is limited by elevated water temperatures, organic loading (barnyard runoff), sedimentation and lack of suitable cover for trout. Degraded habitat, sedimentation, Low D.O. levels. Existing use is WWFF, codified use is WWSF (default) and the potential use is Cold (II). Nonpoint sources ( streambank and upland erosion, barnyard runoff). A 1992 fish survey found no trout and 11 forage and minnow species. White sucker, Johnny darter and creek chub were the most abundant forage species. Continuous monitoring conducted in 1992 found dissolved oxygen conditions during a 1.13 inch rainfall event on September 14th below the state water quality standard of 5.0 mg/l for fish and aquatic life. A barnyard located near the stream was identified as a potential source of organic loading.
A warm water fish community was found at two sites on Trump Coulee Creek in 2007. No trout or other cold water species were collected during the surveys. A newer barnyard system is in place upstream from the South River Road site. Continuous dissolved oxygen monitoring should be completed to determine if oxygen concentrations improved since the 1992 survey.
Macroinvertebrate samples were collected but results are not yet available. A final TMDL for sediment was approved for this waterbody on 5/6/04. Hard copy files are in DNR Black River Falls office. Although Trump Coulee Creek is listed for both sedimentation and dissolved oxygen
impairments, this TMDL is limited to the sediment aspects. WDNR staff believe the
control of manure in runoff from a single animal feeding operation was the cause of the
dissolved oxygen problem. When monitoring results are available, WDNR intends to
pursue “delisting” of the dissolved oxygen impairment.
