Impaired Water - Unnamed (Un. Trib. To Onion River via Waldo Impoundment)
Sheboygan County, Wisconsin
SH04
52600
0.40 - 4.13
3.73
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
The watershed for the Waldo Tributary to Onion River is a mixture of wetland, agricultural and urban land use. The upper reaches of the stream have been channelized and sedimentation is a problem. Storm water runoff and associated nonpoint source pollutants are the primary source of impairments to the stream. The lower reach of the stream is in good condition with adequate habitat, but low water elevation and flows. On 303d List since 1998. New water quality data reviewed in the 2024 cycle indicated no additional pollutants.

Impaired Water Notes
The watershed for the Waldo Tributary to Onion River is a mixture of wetland, agricultural and urban land use. The upper reaches of the stream have been channelized and sedimentation is a problem. Storm water runoff and associated nonpoint source pollutants are the primary source of impairments to the stream. The lower reach of the stream is in good condition with adequate habitat, but low water elevation and flows. Stream section that is impaired is east of State Highway 57 and Pheasant Valley Road (43.63967, -87.93636, WGS-84) to downstream confluence at Onion River (Waldo Mill Pond) (43.68049, -87.94767, WGS-84).

Fish, Habitat, and Water Quality surveys on Unnamed Tributary to Onion River (John Masterson and Craig Helker, WDNR, 2007) on stations: 10 meters upstream of State Highway 28 (SWIMS Station: 10022199), 20 meters upstream of Lyndon Street (SWIMS Station: 10022200) for parameters: Electrofishing CPE Survey, Fish Habitat Survey, Hydrolab (Instantaneous Water Quality Parameters).

Results indicate Fish IBI scores were fair and very poor. Habitat ratings were good and fair. Dissolved Oxygen (mg/L) was monitored at two (2) locations for 4 days with values of minimum (0.90), maximum (7.78), and median (2.86) for the STH 28 site and minimum (8.40), maximum (8.98), and median (8.69) for the Lyndon Street site.

Unnamed Tributary to Onion River is listed on the Impaired Waters List for degraded habitat, due to non-point source discharges. Current habitat and fish biological indices rate the stream in good to fair condition at the downstream site and very poor to fair at the upstream (STH 28) site. Dissolved oxygen levels were below 5.0 mg/L at the STH 28 location and appeared to be in good condition at the downstream site.

Recommendation: Delist the stream downstream of Depot Street in the Village of Waldo. The stream portion upstream of Depot Street should remain on the 303(d) list for degraded habitat and it is also recommended to add low dissolved oxygen as an impairment for this stream reach.
