Impaired Water - Eau Galle River (Eau Galle River)
Pierce, St. Croix County, Wisconsin
LC03
2055000
32.55 - 33.79
1.24
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
Factors limiting the potential of the Eau
Galle River are lack of habitat (pools), flooding, and transport of bedload sand which smothers instream habitat. The 4.5 miles of Class 111 trout and additional 1.5 miles of warm water forage fishery above Eau Galle Lake at Spring Valley have the potential to attain a classification of Class II
trout if the effects of polluted runoff are controlled. The 10.1-mile stretch of Class 11 and 111 trout water below Spring Valley is threatened by turbidity, natural erosion, and streambank grazing. The 1.8 mile section of Class 111 trout stream below Spring Valley could improve to Class II trout if the
effects of polluted runoff are abated (Engel, 1993). High concentrations of phosphorus also cause elevated pH in this river.

Impaired Water Notes
From 1998 list: Existing use is WWFF, potential use is WWSF, and codified use is Cold III. This listing appears to be based on a 1993 recommendation from Marty Engle that an additional 1.5 mi. of stream that was WWFF had the potential to be Cold II (see attached). From 2001 Basin Report (just area above Lake George): Existing use is Cold III (4.5 mi.), WWFF (12.2 mi.), potential use is Cold II (4.5 mi.) WWFF (12.2 mi.), and codified use is Cold III (4.5 mi.) WWWF (12.2 mi.)

Cause of impairment (ex. temperature, nutrients, sediment, BOD, toxics, etc.): Sediment, Habitat, Temperature (from 2001 Basin Report).

Source of impairment (ex. point source, nonpoint source, internal load, unknown, etc.): Stream Bank Pasturing, Barnyards, Flooding, Stream Bank Erosion, and Cropland Erosion (from 1998 Watershed Report)

Description of monitoring conducted (including dates, results, quality of data and reports): Fish and Habitat Sampling 1998 Field Season, See attached excerpt from the 1998 Eau Galle River Watershed Comprehensive Surface Water Resource Report.
