Impaired Water - Saratoga Lake (Lower Barstow Impoundment (Fox River))
Waukesha County, Wisconsin
FX07
771600
28.18
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
The Lower Barstow Impoundment of the Fox River is impaired by low dissolved oxygen and turbidity caused by total suspended solids and total phosphorus. It is also listed for mercury caused by an point and nonpoint sources in the area.
The entirety of this river has a specific consumption advisory for PCBs. This should have already been listed so this was added in 2016.

Impaired Water Notes
The Barstow Impoundment is centrally located in downtown Waukesha. The impoundment itself, along with other areas upstream, are on the Federal 303(d) list of impaired waters. Sediment has collected and been concentrated behind the dam. The impoundment has seen an increased use by the public in the recent years with public recreation, boating, park access, and subsistence fishing. The Badgerland Ski Team hold scheduled practices and shows all summer within the impoundment. There is concern with the possible pollutant load in fish and sediment in this area. With such an increased use along this stretch of river, it is important to identify any possible sources of health risks to the public. There is a large sediment buildup behind dam and throughout the impoundment. It is a concern that this sediment is becoming suspended and translocating downstream from multiple sources. Previous sediment sampling indicated sediment toxicity issues. Follow-up sampling, including macroinvertebtrate and fish community sampling, will assist in clarifying the accuracy of the 303(d) listing and documenting impacts to the waterbody and to public health. The follow-up conclusions will also update the fish consumption advisory.

Impaired Water Notes
A fish community and health assessment will be conducted at three sampling sites in the Barstow Impoundment and Fox River. Fish will be collected and tested for pollutant levels in the spring of 2007. Approval and funding has been granted by Candy Shrank of the WDNR for testing of fish for pollutant load for safe fish eating advisories. A creel survey will be conducted throughout the summer of 2007 to identify fish kept for consumption. A macroinvertebrate kick sample will be collected from each sampling site that is wadable. Quantitative habitat assessments will be conducted at each sampling site. Instantaneous water temperature, DO, pH, Conductivity, transparency tube, and flow will be collected twice at each sampling site. Thermisters will be deployed at each location. Nine sets of sediment samples will be collected and tested from within the impoundment.
