Impaired Water - Menomonee River (Menomonee River)
Milwaukee County, Wisconsin
MI03
16000
0.00 - 2.67
2.67
Water is impaired due to one or more pollutants and associated quality impacts.
Notes
This segment of the Menomonee River was put on the Impaired Waters list during the 1998 cycle for phosphorus, low dissolved oxygen, bacteria, and PCBs in fish tissue. In the 2018 cycle the pollutant chloride was added. Evaluation during the 2022 cycle confirmed the chloride listing. New water quality data reviewed in the 2024 cycle confirmed both the chloride and bacteria listings.

Impaired Water Notes
The Milwaukee River Watershed TMDL was approved by the EPA on March 9, 2018 and covers waters in the basin impaired for Total Phosphorus, Sediment/Total Suspended Solids, and bacteria (E. coli and Fecal Coliform).

Impaired Water Notes
Over 30 years of water quality data collected by MMSD and USGS were used to calibrate HSPF models for assessing baseline water quality in the Menomonee Watershed. This portion of the Menomonee River is being listed for recreational restrictions due to high bacteria (Fecal Coliform) levels. The technical reports by SEWRPC (TR 39) and by MMSD (Watershed Restoration Plans) provide the assessment information to support listing the Menomonee River for recreational restrictions. On average, the two monitoring points on the river exceeded the 400 cfu/100 mL criterion 25% of time. Tributaries in the Menomonee where modeling assessment points exist are also being proposed to be listed for Fecal Coliform as work is being done in the entire watershed to address this impairment.

This water was assessed during the 2014 listing cycle; total phosphorus sample data exceed 2014 WisCALM listing criteria for the Fish and Aquatic Life use, however, available biological data do not indicate impairment (i.e. no macroinvertebrate or fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) scored in the "poor" condition category).
