New Data. Extensive monitoring and analysis found exceedances may be less than or equal to the error inherent in the monitoring process. There is no perceivable impact on aquatic life and modeling suggests complete elimination of point source discharges would have minimal effect on D.O. The marginal exceedances of the dissolved oxygen are thought to be due to natural background conditions including a large complex marshland ecosystem upstream from the listed segment. Best professional judgement and modeling indicates a healthy aquatic community exists in the segment with intolerant fish species including smallmouth bass, muskellunge, northern hog sucker and rock bass being present.

Multiple fish surveys in different years show a healthy fishery within segment A. A recent survey conducted in October 2007 within what was considered to be an area of low D.O. found 19 species of fish including intolerant species such as smallmouth bass, musky, northern hog sucker and rock bass.
Stations: Davenport Street bridge in Rhinelander downstream to Hat Rapids dam (Oct. 2007). Whirlpool Rapids, June 2007, Menard Island , June 2007, 1 mile below Hat Rapids dam downstream, Baseline survey August 2003.
