This stream was evaluated for chloride multiple times between assessment cycles 2014 and 2018; chloride levels were higher than is safe for aquatic organisms. Fish tissue samples taken in 2019 showed elevated levels of PFOS; a specific fish consumption advisory for PFOS in this stream was released early 2020. In the 2022 and 2024 cycles phosphorus levels were too high. This stream is considered impacted by pollutants chloride, phosphorus, and PFOS and is part of the states impaired waters list.Pollutant

Recent sampling by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources shows elevated PFOS in fish tissue and surface water in those waterways. PFOS is one of many per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFOS detection is the driving force behind establishing the fish consumption advisory for Starkweather Creek and Lake Monona in Dane County.
