Impaired Water Notes
The West Branch of the Root River Canal is listed on the Impaired Waters List for low Dissolved Oxygen, with Phosphorus and sediment the listed causes. Diel DO monitoring in July, August, and September/October confirmed low Dissolved Oxygen levels within the West Branch of the Root River Canal. DO levels at the two West Branch monitored stations fell below 5 mg/l during Diel DO monitoring events.

In addition, the in-stream habitat of the West Branch of the Root River Canal is limited due to historical dredging, and this is significantly impacting water quality. It is recommended that when 303d listing and de-listing criteria for degraded habitat are created, that the West Branch of the Root River Canal be evaluated using these criteria, and listed as appropriate.
