South 43rd Street Ditch is impaired due to recreational restrictions because of high Fecal Coliform bacteria levels. The Watershed Restoration Plan for Kinnickinnic River Watershed developed by MMSD 2009 assessed this area against a Fecal Coliform criterion of 2000 cfu/100 ml and showed that this waterbody exceeds this criterion 18% of the time (this is above the WisCALM threshold of 400CFU/100mL). The mean Fecal Coliform concentration is 4080 cfu/100 ml on an annual basis and 2047 cfu/100 ml seasonally. 60% of the urban nonpoint loads could not be explained land uses through the model. This could mean other sources such as leaking sewers or illicit connections could be adding to the FC load. Bacteria loads to this watershed are considered significant and are a concern for the Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust (SWWT) Policy Committee: http://www.swwtwater.org/home/documents.cfm
