LOST LAKE PROTECTION & REHAB DISTRICT: Lost Lake AIS-EDR Project - Phase 1

Purpose

Lost Lake P&R District is sponsoring an AIRR grant to be completed by June 30, 2016. The project will focus on surveying, monitoring, mapping, and hand-pulling the new discovery of EWM in Lost Lake, Vilas County. Project activities include: 1) Conduct annual early-season AIS and peak-biomass surveys; 2) Conduct volunteer AIS surveillance monitoring; 3) Control EWM by professional hand-removal efforts; 4) Host a project kick-off meeting; 5) Purchase a GPS; 6) Develop annual maps and letter report. Project deliverables include: 1) EWM survey data and maps; 2) GPS; 3) Annual letter report describing the findings of the early-spring survey, peak-biomass survey, hand-pulling efforts, and guidance for continued control actions. Specific conditions for this project: Annual letter report needs Dept review and approval. WDNR Lakes Management Coordinator will be provided with an electronic (pdf or word) copy of letter reports, all maps, and all aquatic plant and GIS data.

Lost Lake, Vilas County is a 544 acre lake with a maximum depth of 20 feet. During the 2013 growing season, a member of the district found a suspicious milfoil plant which was later confirmed by the Vilas County Land and Water Conservation Department to be Eurasian water milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum, EWM). Onterra, LLC was contracted by the Lost Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District (LLPRD) to complete a focused EWM survey in October 2013 within the area of the lake where EWM had been located. Onterra ecologists located two colonized area of dominant and scattered EWM as well as numerous occurrences of clumps of plants or single or few plants during the survey.
The Lost Lake Preservation and Rehabilitation District solicited the services of Many Waters, LLC to use Diver Assisted Suction Harvesting (DASH) to manage for Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) on Lost Lake, located in Vilas County, WI.
