The Spider Chain of Lakes in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, is valued by riparian owners, area residents, Sawyer County, and the WDNR for its fisheries and for recreational use. During 2000 the Spider Chain of Lakes Improvement Association initiated a project to complete a macrophyte survey of the five lakes within the Spider Chain of Lakes. Project objectives include: (1) establish baseline information and (2) identify any issues of concern such as the presence of exotic (i.e., not native to this area) species. The survey results may be used to detect changes in subsequent years.

The Spider Chain of Lakes Improvement Association, Inc. proposes to conduct a comprehensive macrophyte vegetation survey and a sociological association membership survey on the five lakes involved in this chain of lakes in Sawyer County. This Phase 1 project would involve "Little Spider Lake Basin" and Clear Lakes. Phase 1 activities would include; conducting macrophyte surveys on "Little Spider" and Clear Lakes, using standard methods specified by DNR and , conducting membership homeowners surveys on these two lakes. Ongoing project activities would be disseminated via newsletter(s), meeting(s), and news release(s), and compiling a final report. Specific deliverables for this Phase 1 grant project will include: ? An interim report compiling all information collected during the project activities listed above. ? (If both Phase 1 and Phase 2 projects are funded concurrently, a combined report may be produced to cover both phase projects.) Special conditions for this grant project will include: 1. The macrophyte survey must be conducted to specifications provided by the Dept. of Natural Resources. Mr. Frank Koshere from our Superior Office should be contacted and will provide the current standard specifications. 2. The macrophyte survey report shall incorporate and "sensitive area designations" that may be available for the Spider Chain of Lakes. Mr. Craig Roesler from the Spooner Office and/or Mr. Frank Pratt from the Hayward Office should be contacted for this information. The Department of Natural Resources will be provided with both a paper copy and an electronic copy of the final report. The project results will be disseminated to the public by newsletter(s), public meeting(s), and local newspaper articles.
