Pigeon River TWA 2015, 2016, 2017

Purpose

The Lower Pigeon River Targeted Watershed Assessment will provide baseline water quality data in support of NRCS's and Waupaca County's efforts through the NWQI program to reduce the impact of non-point source pollutants. The Lower Pigeon River will be added to the 2014 Clean Water Act Section 303d list of impaired waters for the pollutant phosphorus. This TWA will provide the baseline data for comparison to data collected after BMPs have been installed in the watershed. [TWA HUC 12-040302021103]

Objective

This watershed has been selected as one of three HUC 12 watersheds in Wisconsin to implement BMPs to improve water quality through the USEPA's National Water Quality Initiative program. This project will provide baseline water quality data to evaluate the effectiveness of BMPs installed in the watershed. This project will collect Total Phosphorus samples six times (May through October) at 9 locations in the watershed in 2015. Fish and aquatic macroinvertebrate IBI surveys will be conducted at 6 locations. Quantitative habitat assessments and thalweg depth surveys will be conducted at 8 locations as well. Monitoring will occur in 8 WBICs: 293900, 295600, 293800, 293700, 5016138, 293100, 5015231, & 5015321.

Outcome

Water quality monitoring will be conducted at 9 locations. Aquatic macroinvertebrates will be collected at 5 locations in October 2015. One day of sampling and 1 day to represerve and transport to UWSP. All data will be entered into SWIMS database by UWSP staff by 12/30/2016. Quantitative Habitat surveys will be conducted at 8 locations in FY16. Three sampling days in FY16 are needed to complete this monitoring and 1 day to enter the data into database. All data will be entered into FMDB by Water Resources staff by 12/31/2015. Fish surveys will be conducted at 6 locations in FY16. Two days of sampling will be completed for the field surveys from July through September 2015. All fish data will be entered into the FMDB by Water Resources staff by 12/31/2015. Thermistors will be deployed at 8 locations from May to October 2015 to collect temperature data. Two sampling days will occur to deploy and retrieve the thermistors. All data will be uploaded into SWIMS by Water Resources staff by 06/30/2016. Inorganic chemistry (TP) monitoring will be conducted at 9 locations. Sampling will occur once per month May through October 2015 by WAV volunteers. All samples will be sent to Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene for analysis and will be entered by the lab into SWIMS by 06/30/2016. A final report will be written and attached to this project by 12/31/2016.
