BONE LAKE MANAGEMENT DISTRICT: Bone Lake Internal Load Study & Comprehensive Plan Update

Purpose

The Bone Lake Management District is sponsoring a project to monitor fisheries, wildlife, and watershed and in lake water quality. The final deliverables include all data collected, examples of education and outreach materials, agendas and minutes for planning meetings, watershed BMP designs, and an updated water quality strategy that includes results of the watershed and internal loads studies. Specific project tasks include: 1) Watershed & in lake water quality monitoring; 2) Fish & wildlife monitoring; 3) Sediment core collection & analysis; 4) Watershed BMP design. Special Conditions: 1) CLMN efforts should not be duplicated, and these data shall be included in the trends analysis and final reporting; 2) All data shall be entered into the SWIMS database as appropriate. This scope summarizes the project detail provided in the application and does not negate tasks/deliverables described therein. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps, and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the regional Lake Biologist.

In situ internal phosphorus loading was evaluated in Bone Lake, Polk County, Wisconsin from 2015 to 2017. Data from dissolved oxygen and temperature profiles were collected at 24 locations scattered throughout the potential anoxic area weekly from mid-May until the end of September each year. These sample sites were distributed between three separate basins within Bone Lake. Internal load was calculated by phosphorus accumulation in the hypolimnion during anoxia and stratification. The phosphorus release was also calculated using mean phosphorus concentration before and after full lake mixing in August.
Newly available estimates greatly increase the percentage of the phosphorus budget coming from internal load from lake sediments when compared with previous studies. The Bone Lake Management District embarked on more detailed and accurate ways to measure internal loading with two studies initiated from 2015‐2017.
Responding to resident concerns regarding populations of Canada Geese on Bone Lake, the Wildlife and Natural Beauty Committee completed an inventory of geese on Bone Lake with support of consultant, Chris Loggers, a retired US Forest Service biologist.
Polk County worked with the Science Museum of Minnesota to analyze algae pigments in Bone Lake sediments. This work followed an analysis of diatoms. Both were intended to estimate phosphorus concentrations and algae growth in Bone Lake in past decades.

Water samples and flow data were collected from various areas of channelized flow around Bone Lake. The purpose of the analysis was to evaluate performance of past practices and to identify new opportunities for watershed runoff reduction projects.
