Purpose

The WI Nonpoint Source Water Pollution Abatement Program was developed to address water quality programs and to implement technical and institutional solutions delineated in the area wide plan. The Hay River Watershed was selected as one of the first five priority watersheds.

Objective

Chemical, bacteriological, benthic, and fisheries data were used to evaluate the water quality of streams and lakes in the Hay River Watershed located in Dunn and Barron Counties.

Outcome

Water quality in the watershed was judged to be generally good based on the biological index. Bacteriological samples exceed safe standards for surface waters in most cases. The water bodies were classified based on fishery potential and water quality. Practices needed to control cropland erosion, animal waste runoff, streambank erosion and eroded pastures were estimated for each tributary.
