Dell Creek TWA 2016 - 2017 (Year 1)

Purpose

Monitor the status of streams and rivers in the Dell Creek section 319 funded watershed for BMP evaluation. The department needs current fish, habitat, temperature, water chemistry and macroinvertebrate data for streams in the watershed. The data will be used to determine whether these streams are achieving their attainable use in order to update the watershed tables, determine if Dell Cr. can be removed from the impaired waters list, and assess the overall health of the watershed and BMP effectiveness as required by Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act.

Objective

Data gathered for this project will be used to evaluate effectiveness of BMPs, update the watershed plan and stream narratives, and update information related to impaired waters listings and attainable use.

Outcome

Fisheries, habitat, and macroinvertebrate data will be collected on 8 sites in the HUC 10 watershed. Data will be collected during the field season of the 2016 calendar year. Data will be entered into the FH database and SWIMS by December 2016 or as soon as data becomes available. Updated streams narratives and watershed report will be entered into SWIMS. Final Report will be drafted in winter, 2017/18.

Study Design

Dell Creek (WBIC: 1295200), four sites to collect fish and qualitative habitat, flow. At two of the sites collect macroinvertebrates,, continuous temperature, baseline water chemistry, and diatom samples, and at one site near the mouth collect 6 monthly TP. One site in each of the following streams: Camels Creek (WBIC: 1297500), Beaver Cr. (WBIC: 1297300), Unnamed tributary (WBIC: 5029152), and Harrison Cr. (WBIC: 1296400) to collect fish and qualitative habitat, macroinvertebrates, continuous temperature, baseline water chemistry.

Reports and Documents
Many of Wisconsin’s water quality standards require multiple visits to make an impairment decision. Every year, several streams sites are monitored, and the field data collected during each visit is used to “flag” problem waters. The following year, follow up monitoring is conducted at sites where our data suggests that there might be an impairment, but we do not have the minimum data requirements to make an impairment decisions based on WisCALM guidance.
