DEER LAKE IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION: Deer Lake Curly Leaf Pondweed Control

Purpose

Deer Lake Improvement Association is sponsoring a 2-yr project to implement approved activities from the Deer Lake Aquatic Plant Management Plan. Project deliverables include GIS data & maps of areas monitored, aquatic plant & turion monitoring reports, management/treatment summaries. Specific project activities include: 1) Curly-leaf pondweed herbicide control; 2) Pre-post treatment aquatic plant monitoring; 3) Turion monitoring. Special Conditions: 1) WDNR\2019s Aquatic Plant Management in Wisconsin guidance shall be followed for aquatic plant monitoring; 2) Sponsor shall contact DNR immediately if a new AIS is found; 3) AIS monitoring and watercraft inspection personnel shall be trained and follow DNR approved protocols. This scope summarizes the project detail provided in the application and does not negate tasks/deliverables described therein. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps, and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the regional Lakes Biologist.

Reports and Documents
On May 5, 2017 22.6 acres of Potamogeton crispus-curly leaf pondweed (CLP) were treated with endothall(broad spectrum herbicide) to reduce the frequency and density of the CLP within 5 different beds. The treatment resulted in a significant reduction (based upon chi-square analysis) comparing the frequency of occurrence before treatment from April 2017 to after treatment surveyed June 2017. There was also a significant reduction comparing the post treatment survey frequency in 2016 to the post treatment frequency in 2017. There was a slight reduction (not significant) from the 2016 to 2017 in pretreatment frequency. There was a significant reduction in three native species and an increase in one species. Only 0.04 acres of CLP were observed outside of the treatment areas in the entire lake. The turion analysis resulted in a mean turion density decrease in all beds from 84.7 turions/m2 in 2016 to 41.7 turions/m2 in 2017.
On April 29, 2016 22.6 acres of Potamogeton crispus-curly leaf pondweed (CLP) were treated with endothall(broad spectrum herbicide) to reduce the frequency and density of the CLP within 5 different beds. An April 21, 2016 pretreatment survey revealed CLP present in 47.5% of the sample points within the delineated beds. A June 10, 2016 post treatment survey revealed a frequency of 13.7% of the same sample points within the delineated beds. The treatment resulted in a frequency reduction of 71.2%. This reduction was statistically significant (P=9.5 X 10-10). Comparing the pretreatment survey results in 2015 to the pretreatment survey results in 2016, a slight increase in CLP frequency of occurrence in the five beds occurred. The frequency of occurrence after treatment (post treatment survey) in 2015 compared to 2016 showed an increase from 2.1% to 13.7%. The mean density increased from 0.03 in 2015 to 0.2 in 2016 (scale of 0-3). There was a statistically significant reduction (chi-square analysis) in two native species and a statistically significant increase in two other native species from 2015 to 2016. The turion analysis showed an increase in turion density in three of the five treatment beds. Some increase is likely due to increased CLP growth after treatment. It also demonstrates that CLP growth will likely be returning with fairly high density in these beds in 2017.
