Pine River 319 Project-Funded TWA 2018

Purpose

This project will evaluate water quality improvements made in the Pine River Watershed from Best Management Practices installed from 1996 through 2002 as part of the Pine/Willow River Priority Watershed Project. Water Resources staff will use water and inorganic chemistry, habitat, fish, insects, temperature, and diatoms to determine the water quality conditions of the water resources in the watershed. [TWA HUC12-040302022003, 040302022002, 040302022001]. This is a 319 project.

Objective

This project will evaluate the effectiveness of BMPs installed in 3 HUC12 Watersheds in the Pine/Willow River HUC 10-0403020220 Watershed. This project will determine if the goals of the Priority Watershed Project to protect and improve the watershed water quality were met. Monitoring will be conducted in 8 WBICs: 247900, 247800, 248800, 248600, 249200, 250100, 250500, & 250800 Aquatic insect samples will be collected in FY19 at 21 locations. Quantitative and qualitative (Ball 1982) habitat surveys will be conducted at 21 sites. Fish IBI surveys will be conducted at 20 locations. Temperature monitoring equipment will be deployed at 21 locations. Diatom samples and viewing bucket algal abundance assessments will be conducted at 21 sites (all habitat sites). Mid-winter baseflow Nitrate-Nitrite samples will be taken in FY19 at 19 locations. TP, TDP, NH4, NOx, TSS, and BOD samples will be collected at 8 locations during two runoff events in FY18. TP samples will be collected at 8 locations once per month May through October. Diurnal dissolved oxygen fluctuations will be monitored over a 5 day period at 5 locations.

Outcome

Water quality monitoring will be conducted at 23 locations. Aquatic macroinvertebrates will be collected at 21 locations in October 2018. 3 days of sampling and 1 day to represerve and transport to UWSP. All data will be entered into SWIMS database by UWSP staff by 12/30/2019. Quantitative and Qualitative Habitat surveys will be conducted at 21 locations in FY19. 7 days of sampling is needed to complete this monitoring and 2 days to enter the data into database. All data will be entered into FMDB by Water Resources staff by 12/31/2018. Fish surveys will be conducted at 20 locations in FY19. Ten days of sampling will be completed for the field surveys from July through September 2018. All fish data will be entered into the FMDB by Water Resources staff by 12/31/2018. Diatoms will be collected by Water Resources Staff at 8 locations in FY19. Three field days will be needed for the completion of this monitoring. Diatom samples will be sent to the Monitoring Section staff of the DNR Water Quality Bureau. Inorganic chemistry (TP) monitoring will be conducted at 8 locations. Sampling will occur once per month May through June 2018, and sampling will occur once per month July through October 2018. Additionally, TP, TDP, TSS, NH4, NOx, and BOD will be sampled during 2 rain events in FY18 at 8 locations. Mid-winter samples for NOx will be collected in FY19 at 19 locations. Six field days in FY18 will be needed to complete this inorganic chemistry monitoring. Ten days will be needed to complete the inorganic chemistry monitoring needed in FY19. All samples will be sent to Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene for analysis and will be entered by the lab into SWIMS by 06/30/2019. A final report will be written and attached to this project by 12/31/2019.
