DEER LAKE IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION: Deer Lake Curlyleaf Pondweed Contol

Purpose

The Deer Lake Improvement Association is sponsoring a 3-yr project to implement approved activities from the Deer Lake Aquatic Plant Management Plan. Project deliverables include GIS data & maps of areas monitored, aquatic plant & turion monitoring results, AIS monitoring data in SWIMS, management/treatment summaries. Specific project activities include: 1) Curly-leaf pondweed herbicide control; 2) Knotweed control; 3) Pre-post treatment aquatic plant monitoring; 4) CLP bed mapping; 5) Turion monitoring; 6) AIS monitoring. Special Conditions: 1) WDNR\2019s Aquatic Plant Management in Wisconsin guidance shall be followed for aquatic plant monitoring; 2) Sponsor shall contact DNR immediately if a new AIS is found; 3) AIS monitoring personnel shall be trained and follow DNR approved protocols; 4) AIS monitoring data shall be entered in SWIMS. This scope summarizes the project detail provided in the application and does not negate tasks/deliverables described therein. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps, and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the regional Lakes Biologist.

Reports and Documents
On May 29, 2019 12.5 acres (four beds) of Potamogeton crispus-curly leaf pondweed (CLP) were treated with endothall (broad spectrum herbicide sold commercially as Aquatholl K®) to reduce the frequency and density of the CLP within 5 different beds. The treatment resulted in a significant reduction (based upon chi-square analysis) comparing the frequency of occurrence before treatment from April 2019 to after treatment surveyed June 2019. There was a frequency increase (not significant) comparing the pretreatment survey frequency in 2018 to the pretreatment frequency in 2019. There was a frequency increase in post treatment CLP frequency from 2018 to 2019, which was statistically significant. There was no significant reduction in any native species from 2018 to 2019 post treatment surveys. Two small beds of CLP were observed in Deer Lake outside of the treatment areas. A turion density analysis in October showed a small increase in turion density in 2019 compared to 2018 (55.2 turions per square meter in 2018 compared to 78.6 turions per square meter in 2019).
On May 21, 2018 18.8 acres of Potamogeton crispus-curly leaf pondweed (CLP) were treated with endothall (broad spectrum herbicide sold commercially as Aquatholl K®) to reduce the frequency and density of the CLP within 5 different beds. The treatment resulted in a significant reduction (based upon chi-square analysis) comparing the frequency of occurrence before treatment from April 2018 to after treatment surveyed June 2018. There was also a significant reduction comparing the pretreatment survey frequency in 2017 to the pretreatment frequency in 2018, reflecting some long term reduction. There was no change in post treatment CLP frequency from 2017 to 2018, but there was only one sample point with CLP after treatment each year, not allowing for a reduction. There was a significant reduction in three native species from 2017 to 2018. No beds of CLP were observed in Deer Lake outside of the treatment areas. Only a few single CLP plants were observed throughout the lake. A turion analysis in October showed a small increase in turion density from 2017 to 2018 (41.7 turions/m2 to 55.2 turions/m2).
