LEGEND LAKE P & R DISTRICT: Legend Lake EWM Treatment Plan

Purpose

The Legend Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District proposes to control Eurasian water-milfoil (EWM) through chemical treatment and preventative measures in Wah-Toh-Sah, Skice, Sapokesik, Pywaosit lakes during the period 2007 - 2009. The project elements and deliverables are specified in the Legend Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District's Aquatic invasive Species Control Grant Application, dated August 01, 2007. The project includes treating Eurasian water Milfoil; hand-pulling and hand-raking of Eurasian Water Milfoil; annual pre- and post-treatment monitoring and education; continue to use volunteers to conduct the "clean boats clean waters" program. Watercraft inspection records will be entered into the State's online Watercraft Inspection Database. One mid-term progress report and a final report summarizing the two-year project will be provided to DNR. The grantee will provide the DNR Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator with a draft of the final report for comment on report adequacy prior to requesting final reimbursement. DNR to receive both paper and electronic .pdf copies of the final report along with, or prior to, submission of grantee's final payment request. AMENDMENT #1: Remove Wah-Toh-Sah and Skice Lakes from this project.

Legend Lake Plan Update

The water body known as Legend Lake is a chain of interconnected water bodies including Wahtohsah, Skice, Main Channel, Spring, Peshtigo, Little Blacksmith, Big Blacksmith, Sapokesick and Pywaosit Lakes. These nine natural lake basins were dredged and dammed in the 1960s to create a connected waterway that encompasses a total of 1230 acres. The Legend Lake system is located in Menominee County, Wisconsin, and is entirely within the boundaries of the Menominee Indian Reservation. A total of 2500 properties are located on or near the system. Eurasian watermilfoil is an invasive exotic plant that is native to Europe, Asia and Northern Africa. Of the eight milfoil (Myriophyllum) species found in Wisconsin, Eurasian watermilfoil is the only exotic. It may have first appeared in Legend Lake in 2002. In Legend Lake its expansion has been rapid. Its distribution was estimated at 50 acres in 2003, 150 acres in 2004, and between 250 - 400 acres by the spring of 2005. The first effort to physically map the distribution of the plant and measure its acreage, conducted in the fall of 2005, found 538 acres of Eurasian watermilfoil in Legend Lake.
