TOWN OF BARNES: Tomahawk & Sand Bar Lakes EWM Research Project

Purpose

The Town of Barnes in partnership with the WDNR, US Army Corps of Engineers, and volunteers is sponsoring a multi-year research and demonstration project on Tomahawk and Sand Bar Lakes, Bayfield County focusing on treatment of Eurasian Watermillfoil (EWM). The initial and primary control activity will be large-scale application of 2,4-d herbicide to Tomahawk Lake with Sand Bar Lake serving as a no-treatment reference lake. Follow up management will utilize a suite of best management practices, depending on the EWM and lake conditions. The project includes comprehensive study design with frequent monitoring and a sociological component, including limiting recreational use impacts on the lake(s). Deliverables include: 1)aquatic plant survey results including spreadsheets, maps, and data summaries (WDNR & USACOE), 2) monitoring records, reports, and maps including watercraft inspection data and volunteer monitoring results (Town, volunteers, and WDNR), 3)information and education products, presentations, and meeting notes (all partners), 4) an Aquatic Plant Management Plan for both lakes (WDNR). Special Conditions: 1) Sand Bar Lake will be a reference lake with very little to no active management occurring until 2011, 2) WDNR's Aquatic Plant Management in Wisconsin guidance will be followed for point-intercept survey monitoring and aquatic plant management plan development, 3) All Clean Boats Clean Waters data must be collected on forms provided by UW-Extension/DNR and entered into the statewide database for reporting. This scope summarizes the project scope provided in the application and does not supersede the application tasks/deliverables. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the DNR Lake Coordinator.
