LAKE KEESUS MANAGEMENT DISTRICT: Lake Keesus APM Update

Purpose

The Keesus Lake Management District will hire a contractor to update the APM plan of 1998 to meet the requirements of NR 198.43(1). Plant survey data collected in the summer of 2007 (not part of this grant) will be utilized. The APM plan will also assess the curly-leaf pondweed (CLP) population during peak coverage (late spring) to include: 1)A visual survey around the lake perimeter 2)Areas of significant infestation will be mapped using GPS or similar device 3)Digital Images will be taken at all noted GPS location and rake hauls will be collected to assess CLP density The contractor will also promote aquatic invasive species (AIS) awareness to local residents and train volunteers to identify and monitor AIS. 1)A workshop will be conducted for District residents to assist in how to identify and monitor the lake for known AIS on Lake Keesus.2)The workshop will also instruct the residents on how to identify Eurasian milfoil, CLP and zebra mussels in addition to field methods and management alternatives. The focus of the aquatic plant management plan will build on education of residents regard existing AIS and new prevention strategies. Two paper copies and one electronic copy of the final plan will be provided to the department. Exact details for all deliverables are described in the project description of the grant application.
